The Scripture

Isaiah 9:2

2The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

Isaiah 9:6-7

6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

Matthew 1:22-23

22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

23“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).

John 1:14

14The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Luke 2:14

14“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!”

Scripture quotations are from the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), which is in the public domain.

About the Song

Isaiah 9 speaks to a people walking in darkness and promises them a great light: a child born to us, a Son given, called Mighty God and Prince of Peace, whose reign will never end. Centuries later Matthew tells the birth of Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah's promise of Immanuel, God with us.

Unto Us carries that promise from the prophet to the manger. The verses move from the dawn breaking over a dark land to the Lord of heaven laid where humble creatures stayed, and the chorus answers with the angels' song: glory to God in the highest.

Lyrics

The people walking through the night
Have seen a great and rising light
On all who dwelt in death's cold land
The dawn now breaks at God's own hand

Lift up your eyes, behold the Son
The promised One of God has come

Hear the horns, the Son is born!
The promised One, the Holy One!
The ancient words are now fulfilled
The Son of God has come to dwell
Unto us, a Son is born!
A Son is born!

Gloria in excelsis Deo
Gloria in excelsis Deo

A virgin's Son, a promised sign
Immanuel, the Word divine
The Mighty God, the Prince of Peace
His rule and reign will never cease

No golden throne, no royal hall
The Lord of heaven came so small
The One through whom all things were made
Was laid where humble creatures stayed

Lift up your eyes, behold the Son
The promised One of God has come

Hear the horns, the Son is born!
The promised One, the Holy One!
The ancient words are now fulfilled
The Son of God has come to dwell
Unto us, a Son is born!
A Son is born!

Gloria in excelsis Deo
Gloria in excelsis Deo

The light still shines into the dark
A hope that time cannot erase
The Word made flesh has come to dwell
And show the world the Father's grace

Hear the horns, the Son is born!
The promised One, the Holy One!
The ancient words are now fulfilled
The Son of God has come to dwell
Unto us, a Son is born!
A Son is born!
